BioBarrier® Root Control Solutions for Green Roofs!

Bonita Springs, Florida

The above picture shows the geotextile/gravel drainage layer put down before the BioBarrier® layer is installed.

As growth continues in South West Florida, innovative green roof designs are becoming more important and very popular.  In these designs the need for root control is critically important.  As trees, flowers, and grasses flourish, the infrastructure of the roof needs to remain in its constant engineered state.  With this in mind, a local Bonita Springs landscape specialists contractor chose to install the innovative solution needed for this application.  BioBarrier® is  made of a durable, nonwoven, polypropylene geotextile fabric with permanently attached nodules containing trifluralin.

What is Trifluralin? Trifluralin is used to prevent root tip cells from dividing, which is the method by which roots grow. The nodules are engineered to slowly release the trifluralin, creating a zone where root growth is inhibited. The geotextile fabric is porous to allow air, nutrients and water through it so that soil hydrology can continue to be healthy.  This was the answer to maintain the roof gardens structural integrity.  Roof Garden design is a wonderful solution to balance out the ever growing concrete jungle that human impact creates.  Check back with us soon to watch this project come alive.  If you are designing ,or have designed and need available contractors in your area, call your local Midwest office and they will point you in the right direction.
