Home owners on Lewis Smith Lake Alabama are constantly trying to stop erosion on there properties. Working with local Midwest consultant, the owner decided to local abundant raw materials and designed several gabion walls. These walls were designed for earth retainment for their property bordered the lake on a steep slope. A gabion structure was first built strategically at the left hand side of the property. This wall was then backfilled to build up the yard and lessen the slope in that area. A second wall was then created directly in front of the house. This wall adds extra stability to the home on the property and also helps hide access to the basement in which the home owner had requested in their design. A third higher wall curves from the right front across to the left and allows the most fill on the slope with a 20 foot wide level area. The forth wall is at the water line and has rip-rap above and to the left. The owner gathered some of the original stone from the area and used it in the outside face of the walls to add to the aesthetics of the wall. A geotextile fabric was used behind all of the retaining walls to help provide protection against hydraulic pressure created by the severity of the slope. |

The access road to this
house was only about 10’ wide with no parking area and no way to turn
around. The pictures to the left show where a hill side was cut out to
widen the road and allow a parking/turn around.
