Project: Jewish Reconstructionist Congregation General Contractor: Bully & Andrews Subcontractor: Moore Landscapes (gabion installer) Architect: Ross Barney + Jankowski, Inc |
The Jewish Reconstructionist Congregation’s new building provided some unique situations regarding land space, using recycled materials, etc. With the construction of an entirely new building, the old building was torn down creating “unusable” brick and concrete. The owners and architects came up with an interesting way to decorate their sidewalks using the “wasted” materials. Over the course of almost 2 years, Midwest Construction Products, the architects and the contractor discussed PVC coated gabions as decorative walls surrounding the new building and filling them with the old brick and concrete. |

The owners decided to use a 1.5” x 1.5” mesh gabion material in Black PVC coating to blend with the buildings beautiful tinted glass. There were several benefits of the Midwest Welded Wire Gabions. As mentioned, the gabions allowed them to use recycled material and meet LEED requirements. Secondly, the style and design provided protection and beauty (note the enclosed section around the building’s condenser unit). Thirdly, it also allowed them to include lighting fixtures in some of the walls for aesthetics and security. Finally, it also allowed them a place to include their signage, portraying the congregation’s name for it’s members and visitors. Each wall will be capped with concrete to give them their final touch. The most common uses of gabion walls are to provide protection against erosion, work as a retaining wall or control water flow and direction. With Midwest Welded Wire Gabions and a little intelligent imagination, anything is possible.
